LYNAS Rare earth production in Gebeng, Kuantan

I'm not sure if this has been passed down to the citizens of Malaysia, amidst the Sarawak elections which was the main agenda.

For the past few weeks, the people of Kuantan stood up and raised their concern over the construction of a RARE earth production facility in Gebeng Industrial Estate, Kuantan (approx 30km from Kuantan town). About 2 years ago, the Pahang government approved the project by LYNAS Corp, Australia to construct the facility. Little did we know of its consequences. Little did we know that this facility will be creating a mass dump site of radioactive waste at the back of our homes.

Just some background on RARE earth materials (I'm no chemist, but these are some of what I've gathered) :-

1. RARE earth materials are rare....(duh!). And it can only be found on limited parts of the world (it I'm not mistaken, I've read somewhere that there are only 3 locations in the world).

2. It is used in the making of iPhone, bombs, hybrid cars etc...

3. Currently, China donimates (in fact, they are the only ones!) the production of the materials coz no other countries would want it at their backyards....and that includes Australia.

Malaysia's last RARE earth project in Bukit Merah, the Asian Rare Earth (ARE) plant was a warning to us (that was back in the 1980s). Nearly 20 years since it was shut downed, till todate the site is still being cleaned up at a cost of over RM300m and has been linked to at least 8 cases of leukemia, 7 resulting in death. Have we not learned from the past?

LYNAS is claiming that the thorium (the radioactive element found in virtually all rare earth deposits) produced now is really really low. So much lower than that of Bukit Merah. Hence, there will be a low risk of high radiation exposure. But there's a saying that goes "Sikit-sikit, lama- lama jadi bukit". If you're exposed, it means you're exposed. Little or not does not matter. And if you're exposed for a very long time, chances are you are facing a high level of radiation. What say you?

And therefore, I am 100% against it. For my future, for my family's future, for my generations to come. I wouldn't want a miniature "Hulk" as my baby, now would I? So please do support our cause, the people of Kuantan's cause. You can click here to join in our group through Facebook.

Blog Revival!!!

So, its decided that my blog be revived to its former glory. I've been receiving many comments through my emails and FB messages on what the heck happened to this Ah Beng these past few months. Some made assumptions that I am dead, some thought I've changed sex, some said I've lost my way around the world and some still communicates with me through Facebook.

Baby Portrait - Giselle Heidi Surin

Giselle is one of my photog buddy's daughter, Vincent Albert Surin. Funny name huh?...He's a Portugese Chinese and a mighty handsome dude. His wife, Felicia is also one beautiful lady. And Giselle certainly followed their traits.

This was taken when the guys and I had breakfast last Saturday at our usual hangout ie Oldtown Kopitiam which is situated only a stone's throw away from my studio. Shooting Giselle is not an easy task. But then again, shooting any baby portraiture needs a lot of patience and a lot of hard work. The result, extremely happy for my 1st baby shoot.

Not going to talk much here. But I am so totally hooked on the beauty dish I used on my studio's strobes. The model we engaged was Polin. The last time we shot her was about 2 months ago. Since the last shooting, Polin did improve tremendously. Enuff said, enjoy :)

Silhouette Studio & Gallery 2nd Outing @ Pantai Beserah

This was a tiring week. Loads and loads of office work, and not one photography job for the last 2 weeks. But alas, my partner Steve managed to contact 4 models and we hired them to model for us last weekend. And when it comes to photography, I am myself again.....putting back all my worries and stress from work behind. Here are some of my favourite shots of the day.

1st up is Peggy Yong. We hired her before for the studios runway show last October. She never fail to impress me with her poses.

Next is Jane Kwan aka Banana. Not sure why the girls call her that. Jane has what it takes to be a successful model. Love her facial expression.

Our 3rd model is Sue San Kok. She's rather new to the industry. But she has excellent curves and feature. One of my favourite as well.... :)

And last but not least is Joanne Ng. She has that cute Japanese innocent look that most men would die for....the Kawaii look :P

Some behind the scenes shots.....everyone was so eager to take a shot at the models. And the outing was a success. Kudos to the hard work and dedication of the Silhouette Studio team, models and photogs who were there to support us.

Model Shoot - Evon Tan

We were waiting anxiously for Evon to arrive from KL. For those who are unfamiliar, Evon Tan is the up and coming model superstar in the photography world. She has graced some poses for Louis Pang (the master of wedding photography), posed for Joe McNally (the God of photography) who mentioned live on 8TV's Breakfast Show that she is one of the best model he had ever worked with (his career spans over 2 decades) and tonnes more. And we had the privilege to work with her last weekend.

We hardly had the chance to shoot one on one with a professional model before this, and having worked with Evon is the next best thing after my lovely wife, Rachel (see honey, you're still no. 1 in my heart). Shots after shots, Evon never failed to strike a different set of pose. She posed so much faster than the click of our cameras. We had about 3 hours of studio session and another 2 hours outdoor at the beach. We had so much fun even though we were sweating from head to toe under the hot, late afternoon sun. Model Photoshoot

Another week's assignment for an outdoor model profile shoot. Honeey Kui is relatively very new to modelling. She has very minimal exposure on the catwalks and her poses are still very stiff. However, she has the potential to be a successful model. She's so eager to learn and listen to instructions and directions from the photographer. At the end of the day, I was happy that I managed to get a number of shots to my liking, and most importantly, the model likes it too. So here are some of my shots.....

Before & After Portraiture Shots

Many of my fellow photogs did ask me this question. Why portraiture? Why does a structure of the human bone fascinates me? Easy question to understand, but hard for me to explain, personally. Let me just put it this way......you can imitate a structure of a building, you can imitate and build a landscape, but you can never imitate the bone structure of a human being or its character. One may undergo the excrutiating pain in plastic surgery and look like Brad Pitt or Angelina Jolie, but you can never be Brad Pitt or AJ. Each one of us are unique in our own way. That is what I like to capture. The person and his or her character will be reflected on print, and it can be cherished for a lifetime.

Post processing...... as to whether one should or should not enhance a picture, is for each individual photographer's own choice. Personally, there is no right or wrong to this issue. The most important thing is, so long your customer gives the thumbs up, then you're doing your job right. Anuar & Ella Wedding Images

Hiya folks

This will be one quickie wedding post. Anuar & Ella (no....not the rocker lady!!) got wed last weekend, and I was thrilled to be the official photographer. Both of them fell in love whilst working in the same company....which is actually a Golf Course in Kuantan. We had this idea of taking some shots at the golf course, using a Driver and a golf ball as the props. It was a pretty simple wedding without much hassle. Both Anuar and Ella were so accomodating and were so eager to pose for me. I had so much fun during the session. To both Anuar & Ella, congratulations again :)

Kampung Beserah Photoshoot

This was an outing organized by my studio in Kuantan. And for the benefit of every new readers, just a little background of my studio. Located right in the middle of Kuantan town, we (my partners and I) named our humble little studio Silhouette (pronounced as Si-lu-et) Studio & Gallery. Officially launched last October 2009, we specialize in weddings and portraiture. We also cover bits and pieces of commercial and modelling shoots every now and then.

Okay....and now to the agenda at hand. Kampung Beserah is a fishing village located north of Kuantan and is approximately 5-6km from town. Living in Kuantan for the past 33 years of my life, I have not heard of this location before.....which in reality means, I have to get out more :P

To tell you the truth, I am and still not into locally produced movies, be it Malay or Chinese movies or dramas. My wife had been bugging me to get a hold of this local movie entitled "Woo-Hoo!!" I have to seriously give credit to the director and actors that made this movie interesting to watch. A typical Malaysian scene with loads of laughter and family values. Adding to the mix of our multi-lingual community, the movie was filmed almost entirely in Kampung Beserah with bits and pieces of scenes shot in Kuala Lumpur. Right after the watching the movie, I told my partners that we MUST organize a photoshoot at thiss beautiful stretch of beach.

So without wasting anymore of your precious time reading my draggy post, here are some of my images. The models were Maykuan (Ms Pahang Tourism finalist) and Mish Miela (one of my buddy's soon to be wife). Will definitely shoot here again for my next pre-wedding assignments :)

Teluk Cempedak Model Shoot

Hi guys......phew!! Wud a hectic week. Working in 2 different shifts at the same time is killing me. Besides looking for potential investors for the bank,, I had to solicit for wedding jobs as well. No time for myself and the mrs nowadays, and I think I have to sort my priorities straight. All work and no fun makes "The Mrs" a very depressed and lonely wife. So, I have decided to at least have a day's out for ourselves once a week and a holiday out of Kuantan, once every 2-3 months, which I think is do-able. I'll have more time to spend with her should I quit my current job as a "miserable kuli'.

We did another fun outing, this time in Teluk Cempedak with 2 models. Polin has limited experience but Shine Leong had none. A good photographer would be able to teach and guide his/her model how to pose and capture the exact angle to enhance the models' features. Here are some examples that were captured during the shooting.

Model profile - Fatin

January has been a challenging month. With new crazy targets given and daily teleconferencing, it was horrendous. Nevertheless, life goes on. With my photography, I was able to keep myself sane, at least for a while.

Last week, we had another model profile shoot. Fatin was introduced to me by one of my bank customer. It turned out that Fatin was of Malay and Hindustani heritage. A couple of her poses were very Bollywood styled and she looked very much like a Hindustani actress. Love her eyes and features. Her poses were a tad stiff coz modelling is kinda new to her. But with coaching and exposure, I'm sure she'll steal away the crowd with her beautiful looks. Needless to say, her portraits were some of my favourite so far. Enuff with the talking, now on to her pictures :) Enjoy.....

A.A.A.D.D......A new disease??

Recently, I was diagnosed with A.A.A.D.D. - Age Activated Attention Deficit Disorder.

This is how it manifests:

I decide to water my garden.
As I turn on the hose in the driveway,

I look over at my car and decide it needs washing.

As I start toward the garage,

I notice mail on the porch table that

I brought up from the mail box earlier.

I decide to go through the mail before I wash the car.

I lay my car keys on the table,

Put the junk mail in the garbage can under the table,

And notice that the can is full.

So, I decide to put the bills back

On the table and take out the garbage first.

But then I think,

Since I'm going to be near the mailbox

When I take out the garbage anyway,

I may as well pay the bills first.

I take my cheque book off the table,

And see that there is only one cheque left.

My extra cheques are in my desk in the study,

So I go inside the house to my desk where

I find the can of Coke I'd been drinking.

I'm going to look for my cheques,

But first I need to push the Coke aside

So that I don't accidentally knock it over.

The Coke is getting warm,

And I decide to put it in the refrigerator to keep it cold.

As I head toward the kitchen with the Coke,

A vase of flowers on the counter

Catches my eye--they need water.

I put the Coke on the counter and

Discover my reading glasses that

I've been searching for all morning.

I decide I better put them back on my desk,

But first I'm going to water the flowers.

I set the glasses back down on the counter,

Fill a container with water and suddenly spot the TV remote.

Someone left it on the kitchen table.

I realize that tonight when we go to watch TV,

I'll be looking for the remote,

But I won't remember that it's on the kitchen table,

So I decide to put it back in the den where it belongs,

But first I'll water the flowers.

I pour some water in the flowers,

But quite a bit of it spills on the floor.

So, I set the remote back on the table,

Get some towels and wipe up the spill.

Then, I head down the hall trying to

Remember what I was planning to do.

At the end of the day:

The car isn't washed

The bills aren't paid

There is a warm can of Coke sitting on the counter

The flowers don't have enough water,

There is still only 1 cheque in my cheque book,

I can't find the remote,

I can't find my glasses,

And I don't remember what I did with the car keys.

Then, when I try to figure out why nothing got done today,

I'm really baffled because I know I was busy all damn day,

And I'm really tired.

I realize this is a serious problem,

And I'll try to get some help for it,

We were busy gathering as many in house models as we can for this month. All this while, we managed to gather around 6 models, all of which are Chinese. But what if our customers require Malay models? Spray paint their bodies into golden brown? But since our typical Chinese feature has "mata-sepet" instead of "mata-kucing", it will be kinda hard to bluff em, dun you think? So, searching long and hard, perspiring blood instead of sweat, we managed to recruit 2 Malay cuties namely, Nurul and Ika (we can also call her Ikea....lolz). Although they are newbies, but I bet many of our customers would want them on their catalogues.

So, lo and behold...........

Model Profile - Maykuan Chiang

Another one of our model profile shoot. This time round, we had the privileage to take some snaps from one of the finalist of our Ms Pahang Tourism 2008, fourth runner up...Ms Maykuan Chiang. Altogether, we managed to acquire 6 in house models for our commercial jobs as well as our classes. Do give comments on my pictures :)

Why are wedding photography so expensive??

I was approached by several customers inquiring my charges on wedding assignments. And when disclosed, most of them would say....."Wahh!!!! So expensive. I can get cheaper elsewhere!!"....or some might say "Cheaper la. I'm giving you business wor." Others were even worse "Take mine for free and I'll promise you more business referrals from me and the mrs." I did it for the 1st few customers, but the referrals never did come. Stupid??? I wouldn't say I'm stupid....ignorant maybe.

So, the myth on the big huu-haa on why photographers charge so darn expensive for weddings. I was google-ing thru some articles and this one caught my attention. It's kinda detailed so please bear with me.

“Why are wedding photographers so expensive?”

“Photographers just exploit the fact that it’s a wedding and overcharge to make a profit!”

“They’re only there for a few hours! It’s a rip off to charge that much for a few photos!”

“How hard can it be to take photos?”

“It’s not as if they have to develop the photos in a darkroom like the old days!”

These are just some of the questions and comments you might hear from people who have just had the shock of their lives after receiving a quote from a wedding photographer. When a photographer quotes £2000 for an 8-hour wedding shoot, the immediate assumption is that he/she is earning £250 per hour. But if you take a closer look behind the scenes and see what really goes on then you will realise that wedding photographers make nowhere near that kind of money.

Contrary to what people believe, the disheartening fact is that most wedding photographers actually undercharge.
“You are kidding me right?” I hear you say.
Well, instead of asking why the expensive photographer is so expensive, ask yourself this,

“Why is the cheap photographer so cheap?”

What corners are they cutting?
Are they insured?
Are they using the right equipment?
How much experience do they have?

You see, what happens is that many amateur photographers enter the market, confident of their photography skills, and naively start trading without knowing the fundamental elements required to be a wedding photographer.

Most ‘professional wedding photographers’ are running a business. And, as with any type of business, there are many costs involved in running it. However, due to their lack of experience and knowledge of the industry, amateur photographers do not realise how much they need to invest to start a successful photography business. The mindset of most amateurs is that as long as they cover for their labour costs they will be fine. As a result, their prices are a lot less than a professional who has been doing it for years.

By not calculating the proper costs and charging accordingly, amateur photographers are forcing the professionals to lower their prices. This is damaging not only to themselves, as they later realise they are not really making a significant income, but to other photographers and the industry itself.

So, why is wedding photography so expensive?

For a wedding photographer, it’s not just a case of turning up and taking a few well-composed shots and then handing you a CD or DVD. There is a lot more involved in creating the perfect memory of your wedding.

Let’s take a look at some of the main costs a wedding photographer must consider when working out their prices.

Labour

Probably the most important (and obvious) part is the labour. An average wedding can last from anything between 6-10hrs. Your photographer will most likely arrive hours before the main event to capture the small details, like the bride and groom getting ready, decorations, venue layout, vehicles etc… Then comes the main ceremony, reception and the send-off. During the wedding, they will be running around, ducking, diving, twisting, turning, crawling and climbing, all in order to catch those special moments that would otherwise be forgotten.
Doing all that continuously for 8-10hrs is physically draining.
And to ensure they capture everything, they will probably have taken between 800 – 1500 photos by the end of the day. Also, if your photographer comes with an assistant, then the cost goes up, as they have to pay them as well.

Unseen Work

Most people are unaware that a photographer’s job does not end when the wedding does. It is not uncommon for people to think that it’s a simple case of downloading the images from the memory card and putting them on a disk or uploading them onto a website.
The fact is, while the newlywed’s are jetting off on honeymoon to enjoy their first moments of marital bliss, the photographer is still working on producing a timeless memento of their special day. Depending on how many photos were taken, they will spend anything from 6-14 days processing all the images of the day, getting rid of any blemishes, cropping, applying creative effects if need be and adjusting colour and contrast.

Now, lets take that £2000 fee and break it down to an hourly rate, with the assumption that it takes the photographer 5 full working days to process the photos:

Wedding Day: 8 hours
Travel to and from wedding: 2 hours
Post Production: 40 hours

Total Hours worked: 50 hours

Hourly Rate – £2000 ÷ 50 = £40 per hour

As you can see, it’s nowhere near the £250 an hour that is assumed. The hourly rate is in fact84% less! And that’s before we even take into account all the other costs involved.

Outsourcing

Sometimes it’s impossible for one person to process so many photos, especially if the photos are required to be delivered within a short time frame. In this instance, it may be necessary for a photographer to outsource some of the processing to someone else. Professional photo retoucher’s can cost hundreds of pounds per hour!

Equipment

The equipment your photographer brings to the shoot is no ordinary camera equipment. Professional digital cameras and lenses can cost anything from £1200 – £5000. And that’s just for the primary camera body and lens! A good photographer will always bring a back up camera(s) as well as various types of lenses in case the primary fails. On top of that, they need spare batteries, memory cards, filters, flashes and other portable lighting equipment. On average, a photographer could be carrying up to £15,000 worth of gear at your wedding. Outside the wedding, you need to consider the cost of owning or leasing a photo studio, colorama (backgrounds), studio lighting, computers and professional photo editing software like Photoshop. The latest versions of Photoshop products range from £557 – £2264! Then there’s the cost of upgrading every time a newer version is released.

Insurance

With equipment of that value in a crowded environment like a wedding, photographers (smart ones anyway) insure all their gear in case of damage or theft. In addition, Public Liability Insurance and Professional Indemnity are essential for any freelance photographer, especially those who shoot weddings. Each of these insurance types can add up to several hundred pounds a year.

Marketing and Advertising

Nowadays the most effective way for photographers to market themselves is probably online with a high quality professional website. Most photographers don’t have web design skills so they have no choice but to employ a professional web designer.
Getting a website designed could cost anything from £1200 – £4000. And let’s not forget the cost of maintenance, updates and technical support.
Then there’s the recurring cost of advertising. Although word of mouth is a great and effective form of advertising, it simply does not provide enough exposure. To maintain any chance of having a continuous flow of clients, a photographer must spend hundreds of pounds on leaflets, business cards, online ads, magazine and newspaper ads and any other form of appropriate advertising to reach a wider audience. All this adds up to thousands of pounds per year.

Accountant and lawyer

Anybody running a business will almost definitely need a lawyer and accountant. Although it can be easy to keep count of earnings, when it comes to matters of income tax, national insurance, corporate tax, self-assessment or anything involving Inland Revenue, an accountant becomes necessary. Lawyers are necessary for any legal matters…obviously… And we all know how expensive they are!

Travel / Location

If the photographer lives miles away from the venue or, if the wedding is taking place in multiple locations and the photographer is required to capture everything at both venues, then fuel or travel costs may be factored into the price.

Extras

What about all those extra’s that wedding photographers offer? Depending on quality and size, a storybook album could cost anything from £150 – £2000! Yes, even I was shocked when I found out!
Some photographers offer online galleries to host your images so you can show friends all over the world. Then there are those that provide prints of your photos. All these additional touches have additional costs.

Irregular Income

Unlike a normal 9-5 job, a wedding photographer’s working hours and income are not regular. Most weddings happen on a Saturday or Sunday and mainly during the summer season. How many weekends are there in a year let alone in summer? Unless the photographer is in great demand, it is unlikely they will be booked for every weekend of the season. Even if they did, I doubt that it’s enough to survive for the entire year, especially if they live in a city like London. Other than those photographers who have a large client base or own a photo studio, you will find that most freelance wedding photographers take on various other types of photography jobs in order to top up their income. Even this is not regular or guaranteed so you may see your photographer working behind the bar at your local pub during the cold seasons…

Experience / Education

Most decent wedding photographers didn’t just buy a digital camera one day and decide, “I’m going to photograph weddings!”
Nearly all professional photographers invested a lot of time and money on formal and informal education on the subject. That includes courses, seminars, on-the-job training and apprenticeships. Even after gaining the knowledge, they spend years perfecting their practical skills operating various types of camera equipment, image composition, lighting, posing etc…And they have to repeat the whole learning process again as technology rapidly evolves.

Final Thought

So, why are wedding photographers so expensive?

The answer is simple; they invested a lot of time and money developing their business into a solid and reliable wedding photography service. And they did this because they are passionate about photography and take great pride in their work. Considering this, can you really place a monetary value on expertise?

Most newcomers are equally passionate and skilled, but may lack the necessary experience and knowledge to cope with the pressures of photographing somebody else’s wedding.

Next time you receive a quote and you think it’s a bit high, take all of the above into consideration before making a decision.

You also need to ask the photographer key questions and find out more about them and base your decision on that.

Check the photographers portfolio. Are the photos up to the standards you require?
Do they have Public Liability Insurance? If not, who will cover for damages if the photographer accidentally injures someone?
Do they use professional equipment?
How much experience have they had photographing weddings or events?
Are they authorised to provide services to the public?
Do they charge extra for each photo you keep?

In the end, it is your wedding day, and you should go with what you feel is right for you in terms of quality and budget. Just remember, hiring a photographer is not a purchase, it’s an investment. As with any kind of investment, you get what you pay for!

Completely beaten, the humiliated Salvation Army volunteer said, "I'm so sorry. I had no idea."

And then the lawyer said, "So, if I don't give any money to them, what makes you think I'd give any to you?"

This is a good one. Some of you may have heard this, but Id still want to share it with you guys :)

After getting all of Pope Benedict's luggage loaded into the limo (and he doesn't travel light), the driver notices the Pope is still standing on the curb.

"Excuse me, Your Holiness," says the driver, "Would you please take your seat so we can leave?"

"Well, to tell you the truth," says the Pope, "they never let me drive at the Vatican when I was a cardinal, and I'd really like to drive today."

"I'm sorry, Your Holiness, but I cannot let you do that. I'd lose my job! What if something should happen?" protests the driver, wishing he'd never gone to work that morning..

"Who's going to tell?" says the Pope with a smile.

Reluctantly, the driver gets in the back as the Pope climbs in behind the wheel. The driver quickly regrets his decision when, after exiting the airport, the Pontiff floors it, accelerating the limo to 205 kph.. (Remember, the Pope is German..)

"Please slow down, Your Holiness!" pleads the worried driver, but the Pope keeps the pedal to the metal until they hear police sirens.

"Oh, dear God, I'm going to lose my license -- and my job!" moans the driver.

The Pope pulls over and rolls down the window as the cop approaches, but the cop takes one look at him, goes back to his motorcycle, and gets on the radio.

"I need to talk to the Chief," he says to the dispatcher.

The Chief gets on the radio and the cop tells him that he's stopped a limo going 205 kph.

"So bust him," says the Chief.

"I don't think we want to do that, he's really important," said the cop.

The Chief exclaimed, "All the more reason!"

"No, I mean really important," said the cop with a bit of persistence.

The Chief then asked, "Who do you have there, the mayor?"
Cop: "Bigger."

Chief: "A senator?"

Cop: "Bigger."

Chief: "The Prime Minister?"
Cop: "Bigger."

"Well," said the Chief, "Who is it?"

Cop: "I think it's God!"

I was getting kinda bored with the normal makeup style with my weekend modeling shoot, so I requested my wife to do something slightly different but not exaggerated. Something simple to compliment the bone structures of the model. So Rachel came up with the idea to use yellow and black against my ocean blue backdrop and the end result was simple yet effective. Unfortunately, Rachel had to leave after the makeup and so we were stuck with the same makeup against a red backdrop....not pretty. Neways, here are some of my shots that I really liked.

Alvin & Jocelyn Wedding Day

It was a long and tiring weekend for me. Woke up at about 8.30am for a pre wedding shoot for my photographer/buddy till about 4.30pm. And then back home to charge the batteries for an event shoot @ NZ Wheels, Ktn for their launching of the new Merc from 6.30pm till about 10.30pm. Had my dinner at 10.45pm and chatted with my buddies @ Old Town Kopitiam, Star City till about 11.30pm......and then rushed back home again to charge the batteries for a wedding day shoot @ Sg Jerek, Maran at 3.00am. Yup.....3am in the morning for a wedding day shoot. I bet many pro wedding photographers have not done this before. Well....I had. And it was quite an experience.

Though my head was coaxing me to go to sleep during the journey but I managed to get a hold of myself by reminding that this was a job. My clients are paying me for this. Everything ended at about 11.00am. But then I rushed to church for my solo act of praise which I thought had ended half an hour earlier. Neways, I got home at about 2.00pm, took my bath and slept till 7.00pm. Had dinner at 7.30pm and rushed back home to do the slideshow for Alvin's dinner the next day. So.....I had an enjoyable weekend, how about you??? :P

A daughter sent a telegram to her father on passing her B.Ed exams, which the father received as "Father, your daughter has been successful in BED."

A husband, while on a business trip to a hill station sent a telegram to his wife "I wish you were here."
The message received by the wife was "I wish you were her.."

A man wanted to celebrate his wife's Birthday by throwing a party. So he ordered a birthday cake. The salesman asked him what message he wanted put on the cake.He thought for a moment and said, put "Getting older but you are getting better".
The salesman asked "How do you want me to put it?"
The man said 'Well...put "You are getting older" at the top and "But you are getting better" at the bottom."
When the cake was unveiled at the party all the guests were aghast at the message on the cake.
It reads "You are getting older at the top, but you are getting better at the bottom"

So.....the moral of these stories are :-

Wedding Jobs....

Damn!!! I'm stressed out. I've got so many things to do, so little time to spare. 2 jobs, 2 shifts...sigh

Now, most of you might know that I've recently opened my very own photography studio together with some close buddies of mine here in small lil Kuantan. In the beginning, biz was slow, and we were lost.....no direction. Maklumlah, 1st time jadi businessman. So, we were figuring out on how, what, when, which, why.......and so on so forth to run the business. We have bills to pay man!! I've cracked open my head and part of my brain is hollow, empty, nada....kosong. I've got really no idea. Everything seems so blurrish.

And then I thought, why not revive my blog. And post some of my pictures there. It's a free advert ma......Previously, I was blogging about jokes and stuff. None on photography. Plus my url reads......WUDS IN MY BRAINS!!?? Not professional. Sounded like a 3 year old, whose ice cream was stolen by his sister, and he's stomping the ground screaming at the top of his voice in public, humiliating his parents.

So, I've changed the url to calvinsoophotography. It's still on blogspot coz I'm a "kedekut" person. I'm a portraiture and wedding events photographer, so you will hardly see any landscape shots....or macro for that matter. So, every once in a while, you'll have the chance to see my modelling shoots both indoors and outdoors, some weddings that I took etc etc etc. And my biz is on Facebook. Click here to join us. Needless to say, after reviving this blog...my business have improved tremendously. I have wedding jobs now every month (both local and overseas....Singapore counted overseas or not ar??). I have modelling profile shoot every week. And our studio rentals are packed. So much so, that one of my partners had to resign from his previous employment and is now full time manning the studio.

Time does fly.......and it has been a month since we're launched the opening of my studio. Business was kinda slow, due to the monsoon season. Nevertheless, my project till the end of this year is to have as many model profile shoot as I can for next year's preparation. Modeling jobs in Kuantan has been increasing the past few months, so my partners and I decided to have a cut of the cake as well.

This is Polin. She's a freelance model. We called her in for our catwalk during our launch. She's versatile, has endless posing technique, great body and has that arrogant, cocky look which was what I'm looking for in a model. She has been accepting part time modeling jobs around Kuantan and now she's with us on project basis. Enuff of the intro, let's get to the pictures shall we :)

Alan & Cindy's Wedding @ JW Marriott, Kuala Lumpur

Another one of my wedding assignment's....this time round, it was my cousin's, Cindy. I was more than pleased when she called me to be one of her official photographer. We bunked in at Royale Bintang due to the cost (I managed to get the corporate rate *grins*) and the distance to JW Marriott is fairly near. Some might suggest, why not The Grand Millenium Hotel? I'd say....YOU CRAZY AR??? YOU KNOW HOW MUCH THE COST IS FOR A NIGHT THERE?? I rest my case.

And now, back from the commercial break. I had a splendid time shooting her wedding. Her bridesmaids were gorgeous not to mention, a sporting lot. And needless to say, the ballroom was spectacular. Since acquiring some strobe's for our studio, I have been pretty addicted to it. It's a different world all together. Different setups would greatly impact your pictures. For these shots, only 2 strobes were used. The main light was placed on the left of the models with 45 degrees angle while the fill in was on their right. Portrait Professional 9 software was used for the post processing. I must say that this software should be a must for every portrait photographers coz its hassle free and simple to use. I must apologize for not updating this blog for almost 3 weeks now. Life is good, wedding jobs are slowly creeping in, which is a good start pending the opening of our very own studio. We (the partners) had been pumping in quite a large sum of money for our renovation, lightings, classroom etc etc etc. Neways, I pray that our studio would be a success. 26th of September 2009 was the wedding of Tee & Jenny, both of which were from our CG and I was honoured to be appointed as their official photographer. Thanks so much you guys. It's one of a helluva foodie job!!

This was one experience I would not forget. The gang and I were invited to take snaps of foodies by S-Tro Restaurant. Our payment was to eat all that we have snapped. And it was a one of our so-called hazard working for a restaurant....lolz. Neways, the food was delicious. There were about 20 types of dishes and we only managed to gobble up less than a quarter of 'em. And this was only week 1. Altogether, I reckon they have around 50-60 types of dishes. So, we've got to buckle up our belts this weekend for next. Here are some of my takes. Enjoy.... :)

The Gardens @ Berjaya Megamall, Ktn

The recent weeks had me stressed out. Fortunately, I have my photography to keep me sane and out of misery. Last Friday was the launching of a Bridal exhibition entitled The Gardens at Berjaya Megamall Kuantan. Themed "Weddings, Love and Fashion", the organizer made much effort for Amber Chia, Jojo Goh as well as Atilia as their celebrity VIPs.

Yours truly and a couple of his lads were appointed as OPs (official photographers) and we were truly honoured to be given such a task. It was three whole days to remember coz you don't get the chance to shoot celebs like Amber, Jojo and Atilia everyday....or for that matter, not even once in a blue moon and even have some pictures taken with them. Friends, I’m sure all of you male colleagues have had this issue with their partners: Once a month, your partner gets into all kinds of mood which pisses you of but u cant say anything about it coz you’ll have to understand that she is going through PMS. I’ve got some good news!!!!!!!!!!! Read below: males get IMS, equivalent to PMS on a daily basis. Now, we can be angry, moody and a bit off EVERYDAY and just blame it on IMS. Thank god for being male. Hehehe. Check i tout on Wikipedia as well.

Irritable Male Syndrome - The Male Version of P.M.S.81

Well, ladies, it's finally happened...and we've only ourselves to blame. After decades of telling our men that we wanted them to be more sensitive to our needs, sharing our favorite hair stylists with them, convincing them that there was absolutely nothing wrong with being manicured, pedicured and waxed, they've taken the final step and gotten their own syndrome.

Unlike our own beloved and much maligned, PMS, however, IMS (Irritable Male Syndrome) is not confined to a single week of the month. Without treatment, it's more like having PMS 24/7 without the gratifying chocolate binge and overwhelming urge to cry during sentimental television commercials. Yes, I know...it sounds horrible, doesn't it? At least if we're caught piggying an entire pint of Häagen-Dazs, we have the luxury of blaming it on hormones even if we claimed the same excuse just the previous week. No sane man would dare question it.

Now I understand that some of these symptoms occur naturally for the male of the species without IMS, such as being a Mr. Cranky Pants and forgetting what a laundry hamper looks like. Perhaps Prince Charming has put on a bit of extra padding because of your good cooking and every once in a while he's just too darned tired to do anything more than operate a remote control from the couch in the living room. Understand that just like our Häagen-Dazs moment, this is not IMS.

Actually, IMS can be rather serious and while I make light of it in this hub, a man displaying a large number of these symptoms should seek the advice of his doctor.

...and this was a worry?

IMS is a hormonal imbalance of testosterone. Unlike, andropause (previously known by the quaint term "mid-life crisis") IMS can strike a man at any age. According to Jed Diamond, a proponent of IMS therapy, many men experiencing IMS know that something is wrong, but because they view a fluctuation or decline in testosterone level as being rather unmanly, they simply choose to deny its existence and refuse to seek the help that they need.

Mr. Diamond points out in his book, The Irritable Male Syndrome, that while it seems perfectly normal to assume that women are hormonal and men are moved more by logic, this is far from the truth. Men are in fact just as hormonally driven as women (and in some cases more so) by hormonal cycles:

Testosterone levels fluctuate four or five times an hour

Testosterone levels are higher in the morning and lower at night

Men have a monthly hormonal cycle that is unique to each man

Testosterone levels are higher in November and lower in April

Andropause, or male menopause, occurs in men between the ages of 40 and 55

Hormonal changes can be related to stress

The medical community is only beginning to acknowledge this syndrome as being possible...which is pretty much how they viewed the theory of PMS when it first began to gain popularity. Fortunately, men are finding a great deal of empathy on the matter in their female counterparts, who seek to understand why a simple request like "Please pass the salt" is met with a response like "take, take, take...that's all you ever do!" We've been there, done that and have the t-shirts to prove it.

Like PMS, certain factors such as being overweight, improper diet, smoking, drinking and use of medication (whether medically necessary or for strictly recreational purposes) can exacerbate the problem. Uncontrolled stress can also lead to the more serious symptoms of IMS. Daily stressors such as work, traffic, the government can provoke feelings of uncontrolled anger and helplessness which unfortunately can make a man overly aggressive with those closest to him. Even worse, the anger can turn inward and force them to harm themselves.

Do not read if easily offended by bad language...

...if you were offended it's your own fault. I warned you.

Personally thinking, why should anyone be miserable when there are other options? While milder symptoms of IMS can be controlled through relaxation exercises and diet modification, more serious symptoms can be treated with hormone replacement therapy. Why put your mental health, your relationships and job at risk? It all starts with recognizing the symptoms, consulting your physician and making a commitment to get help.

One afternoon a wealthy lawyer was riding in his limousine when he saw two men along the roadside eating grass. Disturbed, he ordered his driver to stop and he got out to investigate.He asked one man 'Why are you eating grass?'

'We don't have any money for food,' the poor man replied 'We have to eat grass.'

'Well, then, you can come with me to my house and I'll feed you', the lawyer said.

'But sir, I have a wife and two children with me. They are over there, under that tree'.'Bring them along,' the lawyer replied.

Turning to the other poor man he stated, 'You come with us also.'The second man, in a pitiful voice then said, 'But sir, I also have a wife and SIX children with me!' 'Bring them all, as well, 'the lawyer answered.

They all entered the car, which was no easy task, even for a car as large as the limousine was.

Once underway, one of the poor fellows turned to the lawyer and said, 'Sir, you are too kind. Thank you for taking all of us with you.'

The lawyer replied, 'Glad to do it. You'll really love my place; the grass is almost 1 metre high!'

Japan GT 2009 @ Sepang Circuit

What would you expect out of the sports of racing.....one, the cars and two, always the babes. Most sports are always associated to beautiful women, and I wonder why is that. I jumped at the chance of course, to snap at beautiful ladies. GT cars.....are secondary. :) And since I've acquired my superb Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8, I really never did have the chance to snap at fast cars. So, this was the perfect event for me to test this expensive piece of glass.

At first, it was really hard to pan the moving fast cars. Even though it was raining cats and dogs, the cars were driven up to 250km/hour. Seeesh....I would've pissed thru my pants if I were in one of 'em. Neways, here are some of my pannings as well as some attractive ladies for your viewing. Derrick (a photog buddy) invited me for a photoshoot session at the Ms Pahang Tourism Pageant 2009, held in MS Garden Hotel Kuantan last night. This was my first experience attending a pageant and I wasn't sure on the do's and dont's. To kick off...the sound system was pretty bad. The MCs were shouting instead of talking, the entertainment sucked...a group of Korean pop boy band wannabes dancing out of rythm, two singer cum comedians....they're clowns to me. But I did quite enjoy the oldies couple dancing tango and waltz.

Besides all these crappy craps, the photo session was good. It was kinda tiring though, having to stand up and kneel most of the time. Ok.....enuff of the bragging and enjoy my shoots. More in my flickr album.

Of late, many events had happened. Some good, some bad. Some beyond our understanding. But I trust and believe that God will heal the wounded. It may be a blessing in disguise, it may be a teaching and an eye opener, it may be a time of self reflection and it may be God's way of testing our patience.

Mahmud grew up in Kota Baru, a town located on the East Coast of Malaysia, and then moved away to Kuala Lumpur to do his law degree in order to fill up theBumiputera quota. He decided to come back to Kota Baru, because he could be abig man and really wanted to impress everyone. So he returned and opened his new office.

The first day, he saw a man coming up the sidewalk. He decided to make a big impression on this new client when he arrived. As the man came to the door, Mahmud picked up the phone. He motioned the man in, all the while talking. "No. Absolutely no. You tell those clowns in Kuala Lumpur that I won't settle this case for less than one million ringgit......Yes. The Appeals Court has agreed to hear that case next week. I'll be handling the primary argument and the other members of my team will provide support. Okay, tell the State Prosecutor that I'll meet with him next week to discuss the details."

This sort of conversation went on for almost five minutes. All the while the man sat patiently as Mahmud rattled instructions. Finally, Abdul puts down thephone and turned to the man. "I'm sorry for the delay, but as you can see, I'm very busy. What can I do for you?"

The man replied, "I'm from Telekom, I've come to connect your line".

Taman Gelora shoots....

...and since this morning's weather was perfect for some photoshoots, I headed on to Taman Gelora. But I am saddened by the fact that most Malaysian do not keep our beaches clean. There were scraps everywhere, with tonnes of cigarette buds scattered and plastic bags throwned just right next to the litter bin. It was an eyesore.

But let's cut to the chase. My post today would be the shots that was taken there. Amidst all the litters and rubbish, Taman Gelora still offers a lovely spot for some photoshoots. Here are some of mine

It's......a NIKON

Most of you know that I am very passionate about photography. I've invested my blood, sweat and tears into my Canon 40D, together with a couple of lenses, speedlights and such. But, one thing disgusts me, or rather pissed me....were the error messages I've received for these couple of weeks. A lot of my buddies informed me that Canon's Service Centre is top notch. Friendly and excellent service. This I have no doubt. But it is time consuming and I had to use my DSLR the whole time.

The Canon 40D was built to last. But its internal hardware/software wasn't. Just imagine yourself shooting at a wedding (the only appointed photog), most shots were candid. Family shots, friends' shots, happy shots, crying shots etc etc etc......you would have to switch the camera on and off once it displayed the "error99" message. There were so many shots that I couldn't take, and I was near to banging my head against the wall.

I consoled myself and planned to head on to the service centre once everything is settled. Little did I know that since participating the Nikonian Academy courses (which was 2 weeks back), and having petty conversations with Nikon users, they have not encountered any major problems with their gears. One guy told me that he accidentally dropped his DSLR on the street 2 years back, and it can still be used till this day...without sending in for service. A Nikon body is said to be of like a Nokia handphone, so to speak. You can drop it, you can slam it....but you can still use it.

So, after contemplating the pros and cons, I decided to change my gears to a Nikon. I got a good deal actually. I traded in all my Canon goods for a Nikon D300, 2 lenses, an SB600 speedlight, an extra battery and a battery grip. This is a photo of my current gear :-

This is an excerpt from an article which appeared in The Dublin Times about a bank robbery on March 2.

Once inside the bank shortly after midnight, their efforts at disabling the security system got underway immediately. The robbers, who expected to find one or two large safes filled with cash & valuables, were surprised to see hundreds of smaller safes throughout the bank.

The robbers cracked the first safe's combination, and inside they found only a small bowl of vanilla pudding.

As recorded on the bank's audio tape system, one robber said, 'At least we'll have a bit to eat.'

The robbers opened up a second safe, and it also contained nothing but vanilla pudding. The process continued until all safes were opened..

They did not find one pound sterling, a diamond, or an ounce of gold. Instead, all the safes contained covered little bowls of pudding.

Weekend photography course with Nikonian Academy

Some of you may be wondering.....you're currently using a Canon 40D, why join a Nikon fler's course. Wanna be a two headed snake isit??

The answer is simple. Canon do not have any courses available in Kuantan, and for that matter.....not in the whole East Coast region. Why?? Go ask those Canon flers. Not enough supporters? We East Coast flers not good enough for them to spend time 2 days guiding and teaching us to use your product...which is way more expensive than Nikon's btw. Any other reasons including these two to me are simply unacceptable. Having spent a huge sum of my hard earned salaries on my DSLR + lens + bag + other nifty jingles (which cost me a hefty 10 grand ok), I would expect Canon to be more pro-active. I am sure that there are many Canon DSLR users that would want a course or two in our region besides Klang Valley, Penang, Melaka and Johor.

Having said that, I had no choice but to join other Nikon buddies for the weekend in Duta Sands Resort, Kuantan. The course extensively covers everthing about Nikon product. The sifus ie Andrew and Sean from Nikonian Academy (both are academy directors btw) taught the how to, what to, which to, when to use different settings for different occasions. Of course, the common terms used such as ISO (pronounced as "eye-so"), aperture, shutter speed, bokeh, composition, and framing were used, so I didn't feel like a green-liquid-spongy-thingy from outer space.

We spent 2 days covering the aspects from Beginners to Intermediate and Flash Photography. And all I can say is......IT WAS BLARDY FUN!! I had such a marvellous time hanging around with other enthusiasts, learning and sharing with them the joys of snapping just about everything under the sun. And to top the icing, we were presented with two ahem! delicious models to shoot with.

As the world evolves, people are not contented by the way they look, how they smell and how they dress. And in a dog eats dog world, everyone seemed to be competing with each other on just about everything.

Facelifts are common nowadays. Plastic surgery is so cheap in some parts of the world, that you'd want to change your whole body, top to toe......take Michael Jackson for instance. All I can remember of him from the past is his shrieking voice and dance "crotch hugging" style. Why would one want to go through so much pain and agony just to be beautiful when you are actually made perfect in God's sight. Months and month of agonizing sleepless nights and torture.....I wonder.

Now, I would like to share a joke on this. Take time to read and have a good laugh.

A 54 year old woman had a heart attack and was taken to the hospital. While on the operating table she had a near death experience. Seeing God she asked "Is my time up?"

I got a phone call early this morning from a brother (Eddy) from Church.

Me : What for??

Eddy : Aiya.....go check out lar. Ok, go back to sleep.

Dragging my half dead legs, I went downstairs to look for the paper, and lo and behold, yours truly's humongous face was featured there. The article reads "Bringing Life to Easter Festivity". Most of the pictures were the children painting easter eggs and mine was with the choir. We call ourselves Wesley Methodist Church Immanuel Choir. All in all, in was a fantastic event. The groupie was really anxious a day earlier coz practice was far from good. Pastor reminded us that this Easter Cantata is not merely a performance. It was our own worship to God. We sang our heart out, did a good job and I believe, God did touched some souls out there. There was a song entitled "Calvary Was For Me" and we featured a clip from The Passion Of Christ. It was a heartfelt worship altogether and we just couldn't wait for Christmas's Cantata. Have a blessed weekend :)

The heat was up this morning, and I've managed to cool off by intentionally making myself busy with work and having tea with my clients. At least for a while. The series of unfortunate events this morning left me with additional investments from my clients today, and I managed to exceed my monthly target. So, I'm kinda cheerful now. This post has been taken down to give face to my beloved wife and my mom in law. Dear, I'm sorry if I had given you a hard time explaining this post to your mum and sis, and I deeply regret it. This verse came into my mind and I would want to share it :-

"Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others" Colossians 3:12-13

God has shown me that venting one's fury and frustration over spilled milk is unGodly and we deserve better. If one loves another, issues like this would not appear.

So to my sis in law, this is what I would want to share with you :-

The expectant father

How will you react after knowing that you're going to be a father? Or rather, what is expected of you after becoming one?

One's answer would differ from each other. However, there are some predictable reactions, for example, after witnessing the birth of your child, most men would declare "That was the most amazing experience of my life." Alternatively, most parents would melt the first time they rocked his/her child in their arms. The father had to play a big role in his child's upbringing, failing which would end up in the child's catastrophy.

It is possible, and perfectly natural that doubts would arise in a man. He may dread that excessive involvement of a father in a child's life doesn't fit in with his mental picture of how a child should be brought up. This issue should not suprise anyone, especially the bigotries that have been so rife in our human society.

These are the same fears of "going against the grain" can also cause a mental torment for a man who wants to be involved in the tasks that have traditionally belonged to the mother eg bathing the baby, throwing away dirty diapers, feeding etc.

The very important thing to remember is that with the exception of the childbirth and breastfeeding, there isn't anything done by the mother that cannot be done by the father. I've noticed that there are several types of fathers, in this case I would only categorize them in three parts......The Instructor, The Worshipper & The Helper.

1. The Instructor

This is the typical Cina Apek type of father who only knows how to instruct his wife into doing stuff around the house as well as taking care of the baby. All he knows is making money to support the family. Being categorized as The Instructor does not mean you're a bad father. It is just that you are a stereotyped kinda guy who goes with the wind and believes that taking care of a child is the job of a woman. Well, my advise is.....take time to get involved in raising your child. The child needs a father, not a banker. If you truly need time to be away from home, make sure the time spent and shared with your family are memorable. There is no substitute for the quality of your time. Taking time off with your family also means that you'll get to know your child closer and understand the character of your child.

2. The Worshipper

This one has got no idea whatsoever. Whatever the wife does, he is in agreement, although he knows that it is not right. He simply says yes to everything. He also spents most of his time at work, busy working up late reason being to garner more salary for the family and mostly ignore the problems at home. "My wife does it all. She is a superwoman." In spite of this admirable intention, there are no new born babies that need the best of material things. What the child needs is to have your attention. Again, this type of father is not a bad father. He just needs to know when to step in, or rather when to be authoritative. Disciplining the child is both the parent's role, not only from one parent.

3. The Helper

This one know how to segregate his time from work and family. He know what's best for the family and spends quality time, in order to get involved in his child's upbringing. He shares the task of taking care of the baby late at night, helps his wife in every way he can. He plans weekly excursions for the family, especially with the infants and older children, and make sure that this is their time and tell them how much he looks forward for these moments. This is the type of father I would love to become. With much prayer and God's guidance, I know I can.

So folks, it is all up to you. Which type of father would you like to become. I cannot say any of the type is wrong. It could be that in the beginning you need to dedicate some extra time to learn new jobs. You may need to get up during the night or you may lose a few nights of sleep. There are plenty of hoops to jump through, but the rewards are there to be taken. There is no substitute to observing your child's early development with your own eyes, and there is no greather satisfaction greater than knowing that you have contributed and played an active part of it.

Women as explained by Engineers

There was a topic shared before in the BloggerUnited lounge. Which would you prefer....a doctor, a lawyer or an engineer. Personally, I wouldn't go for any coz all three has complications of its own. I'd go for a banker.....like me :P

However, when it comes down to evaluation and analyzing a complicated subject matter....say a woman, an engineer would be of good use. Now, many things in life are simple, but these flers made it look convoluted. I'm so gonna get bruised tonight...... :P

It was mealtime during an airline flight, "Would you like dinner?" the flight attendant asked John, seated in front. "What are my choices?" asked John. "A simple YES or NO would be fine", replied the flight attendant.

A flight attendant was stationed at the departure gate to check tickets.

As a man approached, she extended her hand for the ticket and he opened his trench coat and flashed her.

Without missing a beat, she said "Sir, I need to see your ticket, NOT your stub!!"

A lady was picking thought the frozen turkeys at a grocery store but she couldnt find one big enough for her family. She asked a stock boy "Do these turkeys get any bigger?" The stock boy replied "No ma'am....they're all dead."

The police officer got out of his car as the kid who was stopped for speeding rolled down his window. "I've been waiting for you all day" said the police officer. The kid replied "Yeah. Well I got here as fast as I could." When the police officer finally stopped laughing , he sent the kid on his way without a ticket.

A truck driver was driving along on the freeway and noticed a sign that reads "Low Bridge Ahead". Before he knows it, the bridge is right in front of him and his truck gets wedged under it. Cars are backed up for miles.

Finally, a police car comes up. The cop gets out of his car and walks to the truck driver, puts his hands on his hips and said "Got stuck, huh?" The truck driver answered "No. I was delivering this bridge and my truck ran out of gas."

A college teacher reminds her class of tomorrow's final exam . "Now class, I won't tolerate any excuses for you not being here tomorrow. I might consider a nuclear attack or a serious personal injury, illness, or a death in your immediate family, but that's it, no other excuses whatsoever!"

A smart-ass student in the back of the room raised his hand and asked, "What would you say if tomorrow I said I was suffering from complete and utter sexual exhaustion?" The entire class was reduced to laughter and snickering.

When silence was restored, the teacher smiled knowingly at the student, shook her head and sweetly said, "Well, I guess you'd have to write the exam with your other hand."

A woman is standing nude looking in the bedroom mirror . She is not happy with what she sees and says to her husband, "I feel horrible. I look old, fat and ugly. I really need you to pay me a compliment."

OMG!!! OMG !!! OMG!!! OMG!!! My good buddy Lee posted these photos on FB. These photos were taken more than 10 years ago, with me looking dead thin...not so prosperous, so to speak :P

from left to right :- Ah Miao (keyboard), Lee (bass), myself (drums), Ah Yan (guitars), Ah Hou (lead vocals), Ah Chun (lead guitarist) and the only female in our group See Wan (keyboards)......see, back then i have a neck...lolz

This was the original band I was with. We named ourselves "Ablaze"...kinda sound like a Cina Apek band. We joined Guinness Canto Rock back in 1995 and got 4th placing nationwide. Not bad for 6 lalas and 1 ah lian from Kuantan....hahaha. The MC mispronounced our name as "Ah-Bla-Zee"...and so we were known as that. The group disbanded though. Both the keyboardists were kidnapped to God knows where, and the rest of us are semi-retired. We do get together once in a while banging our heads off. All of us are married now, except for Lee who's getting engaged later this year.

The four Ah Peks during rehearsals in Ah Lau's studio called Melody Music & Sound located in Kompleks Teruntum. I wasn't in the picture though coz I took the picture. See the date of the pic.....11 Dec 1995. Gosh...how time flies. Back then, we had to settle with borrowing the guitars from Ah Lau. Now, we all have our own little instruments.

Me and Lee during the Bank's family trip to Genting. Damn....I was thin. So was Lee. Notice my lala sunglasses bought for RM10 from Temerloh. Good deal ma....buy one free one..hahaha

When we were still bujang-ing....we often celebrate our birthdays together. Lee's was on the 5th and mine was ont he 4th August. This was taken during our birthday karaoke session. Notice the hair......back then, it was the in thing to do...middle partition...hahaha.

And now look at us.....Lee was my bestman last 28 June. And I have no neck....wth!! Hair also getting balder......hahahaha.

....and now we named ourselves The Uncle Band. This was during my wedding dinner. The band played....for free of course. We invited a keyboardist Chee Keong (yellow shirt) and Edmund "Siu Fu" (with the Liverpool shirt....yuck!!)

The new addition to the band was of course my darling wife Rachel, who is just a fanatic fan. :) Thanks darling for sticking up with my drums banging almost every night. And oh....I've taken up bass now. So not so much of noise pollution.

Blessings in marriage

Now, some of you may be contemplating the pros and cons in marriage. Some may say, "Why bother....I'm satisfied with what I have now. I'm free, no one's bugging me, I do what I want.....so what the heck!! Why commit yourself to one person when I can have many more to come". These were the answers I got from a friend who is now 35, unmarried. He has all the 5 Cs and a couple more Cs to add. Lisa once discussed this topic in Blogger United's lounge, "Do you believe that marriage is an achievement in life?".....my answer is a solid YES!!!

To some, marriage is too complicated and challenging. While some recognize that family life tied for the lifetime between a man and a woman is a good thing, it still is widely regarded as too hard in practice. Why does one regard marriage as "too hard" to commit when men could brave through storms, and risk their lives to climb Mount Everest or plunge into deep seas and prove that they could hold their breath the longest. The thrill? The adrenaline rush?

I was once that fellow who does not believe in marriage. I made jokes about marriage, mocked those who were getting married and criticized those who were married. Why all the fuss?? What's so special about marriage? Wedding vows??? Gimme a break. Vows were meant to be broken. What happens if you suddenly felt that the person you're married with for the last 10 years was not "the" one and you wished you didn't say "I DO"? So many questionss, so little answers.

For many, there are too many rules in marriage. You can't do this, you can't do that. You can't have this, you shan't have that. Who made these rules anyway?? God?? My answer is this. God did not put rules in marriage. Men did. God gave us brains to think and set us apart from the animals. Are there secrets to a happy marriage. The answer is a simple no. The simple truth is that there is no universal secret. There are no manuals or standardized set of governing rules set in place to ensure and happy and successful marriage. The solid, simple truth is.....your marriage is what you make it, and any rules governing your behaviours should be determined by you and your spouse.

But of course, some simple common sense that needs to be invoked are like honesty, no cheating etc etc etc.....

And if this is your logical explanation to get married, then you're getting married for the wrong reasons. Marriage is all about strengtening that bond of love you had, to go the extra mile, to pledge your one self to that special person wholly who feels the same way towards you. One should not be seeking marriage, one should be seeking someone to love and later on follow by marriage. Many of my bachelor friends, like me before jokes that I will be in prison for my lifetime, not able to go out together for our drinking sessions, and that my life will end in bitterness.

I say this, pity for them, for they are trapped in their tiny weeny small minds and in their own small world. I have been married not too long ago. I wouldn't say that my marriage is successful until the day I die. Yes, there are ups and downs, quarrels, bitterness, rants here and there.....but all these contributes to having a better marriage. We learn from each others' mistakes, we console each other when either one is down, we encourage each other and most importantly, we pray for each other all the time.

Communication is a major key in a successful marriage, and it must be made at a very early point what you'd expect from the relationship. Together, you can best determine what rules, if any, that need to be applied in the relationship, and how you can co-exist happily and successfully, in love, while remaining respectful of each other's wishes.

Up, up and away...the English test.

Lovers of the English language might enjoy this. It is yet another example of why people learning English have trouble with the language. Learning the nuances of English makes it a difficult language. (But then, that's probably true of many languages.)

There is a two-letter word in English that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that word is 'UP'. It is listed in the dictionary as being used as an [adv], [prep], [adj], [n] or [v].

It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP? Why do we speak UP, and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report? We call UP our friends and we use it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, we warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP the old car. ....and since finding a job in the US is scarce nowadays, why not try for an opening as an assassin for the Federal Bureau of Investigations. Or better yet, in Malaysia you could try your hand in the ISA dept. Got no brains one.....hehehehe. Here's to brighten up yer day a lil......

The FBI had an opening for an assassin. After all the background checks, interviews And testing were done, there were 3 finalists; Two men and a woman.

For the final test, the FBI agents took one of The men to a large metal door and handed him a gun. "We must know that you will follow your Instructions no matter what the circumstances. Inside the room you will find your wife sitting In a chair .. . . Kill her!!"

The man said, "You can't be serious. I could never shoot my wife."

The agent said, "Then you're not the right man For this job. Take your wife and go home."

The second man was given the same instructions. He took the gun and went into the room. All was \quiet for a bout 5 minutes.

The man came out with tears in his eyes, "I tried, But I can't kill my wife." The agent said, "You don't have the guts for what it takes. Take your wife and go home."

Finally, it was the woman's turn. She was given the same instructions, to kill her husband. She took the gun and went into the room. Shots were heard, one after another. They heard screaming, crashing, banging on the walls. After a few minutes, all was quiet. The door opened slowly and there stood the woman, wiping the sweat from her brow.

"This gun is loaded with blanks" she said. "I had to beat him to death with the chairs."

Stay healthy....some tips

Now here's some good tips to stay healthy all the time. No, booze is out of the question. What was it again?...No, junk food is not healthy food. I'm not talking about food intake. It's the dos' and don'ts' in life. Okay, let's stay focus on the subject at hand. There was a research done at some place, by some clever people, some time ago. In order to stay healthy, these are what you need to do.....(I've highlighted some of my personal favourites!!)

Health:

1...Drink plenty of water.

2...Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a beggar.

3...Eat more foods that grow on trees and plants and eat less food that is manufactured in plants.

4...Live with the 3 E's -- Energy, Enthusiasm, and Empathy.

5...Make time for prayer (I'm no angel, but hey it really does work. Test God for his blessings, and He will surely answer you)

6...Play more games/sports.

7...Read more books than you did in 2008.

8...Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes each day.

9...Sleep for at least 7 hours.

10...Take a 10-30 minutes walk every day. And while you walk, smile (but don't tersengih only lar. People will say you're crazy)

Personality:

11...Don't compare your life to others'. You have no idea what their journey is all about.

12...Don't have negative thoughts or things you cannot control. Instead invest your energy in the positive present moment.

13...Don't over do. Keep your limits.

14...Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.

15...Don't waste your precious energy on gossip (ladies?? *hints*)

16...Dream more while you are awake.

17...Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.

18...Forget issues of the past. Don't remind your partner with his/her mistakes of the past. That will ruin your present happiness.

19...Life is too short to waste time hating anyone. Don't hate others.

20...Make peace with your past so it won't spoil the present.

21...No one is in charge of your happiness except you.

TV3's SUREHEBOH SUCKS!!!!

As far as I'm concerned, this thing that TV3 is doing around town SUCKS........big time. All it does and support are creating massive traffic jams until late at night, mat rempits strutting their stupid stunts at traffic lights till wee hours in the morning, lotsa smelly people (coz they go round checking out booths in the middle of the hot afternoon sun and from their clever act, they sweat all over resulting in a putrid smell) and some even say that baby abortion after 9 months from the event is rampant. This blardy event caused me to be late for a wedding last Saturday and stuck in a blardy jam for God knows how long. I blogged about this before, some time back in August last year. Not a fan then, not a fan now, never a fan in this lifetime. And just for the record......I'd like to say this again......
